Abstract

This chapter presents an integrated methodology for the assessment of transportation demand on possible alternative short-sea shipping (SSS) services using roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ships, enabling the identification of the most promising service considering the magnitude and spatial distribution of cargos. A numerical method is presented for calculating internal and external costs and is applied in a case study to evaluate the transportation demand attracted by different SSS services between Portugal and Northern Europe, with and without external costs. This methodology allows the identification of most promising services and may guide the allocation of public funding in support of SSS.
