Abstract

This chapter will provide specific examples of how market access issues that have arisen because of food safety (SPS) or technical regulations (TBT)-based challenges can be and have been dealt with. It will discuss how technical specialists, scientists and food safety practitioners have applied various approaches, employing the various disciplines of food safety and food science, to provide solutions to these challenges. It will relate selected regulations discussed in Chapter 1 to market entry prohibition of the relevant categories of products from exporters. Examples of market entry challenges related to seafood products to the European Union and mangoes and curry products to the USA are discussed and the strategies employed in addressing the market access restrictions are also discussed. Also explored are the Canadian requirements for market entry of nutritional supplements, including classification, labeling, specific declarations and other areas for compliance. The importance of attaining certification to a GFSI standard in maintaining markets is also discussed in the context of an iconic developing country brand.
