Abstract

The oil and gas industry has a long history of developing the technologies necessary to exploit discovered resources. In this regard, deepwater is no exception. Since first stepping offshore in the early 20th century, the industry has had to solve a variety of technical challenges to drill in deeper water depths and economically develop and produce the discovered resources. This chapter looks at some of these important engineering advancements, describing them in the context of the deepwater reservoirs and fluids that are characterized in the other chapters of this book.
