Abstract

Ethanol has a crucial role to play in promoting sustainability in the transport sector globally. Its promotion and increased adoption as an alternative to mineral-based transport fuels serve both the attainment of global environmental and socioeconomic development goals. Ethanol production has significant cross-cutting links that span across both the agricultural and energy sectors that support multiple industries the world over. Until such time that critical technological breakthroughs occur, supportive government policies will be key to the sustainability and scalability of ethanol's production as an alternative fuel source. To some extent, the road ahead for ethanol production remains mixed as its future as an alternative fuel source is tied to the uncertainties associated with physical engineering limits, global economic conditions, and social priorities in countries.
