Abstract

Molecular hydrogen or dihydrogen (H2) is a nutraceutical that appeared in the market approximately 20 years ago, mainly as a promising nutritional additive that could tackle oxidative stress, metabolic diseases, and inflammation. Here, we provide an overview of the effects of ingestion of hydrogen-enriched beverages and nutritional supplements, and food products that drive the hyper-production of endogenous H2 by intestinal bacteria, on mitochondrial function in experimental and clinical nutrition.
