Abstract

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) defines adolescence as the decade spanning ages 11 to 21. Multiple international health organizations have recognized the unique health needs of adolescents during this pivotal phase of their lives. AAP has also pointed out the vulnerability of this population because of a dearth of proper transitional care resources. Hypersomnia is a serious condition that impacts quality of life, including school performance and choice of employment, along with direct impact on health-related costs. Thus missed or late diagnosis with inadequate treatment carries greater social and economic burden. This chapter will discuss the challenges and remedies of transitioning care of adolescents with primary hypersomnia and pitfalls of misdiagnoses and erroneous treatments.
