Abstract

The International Classification of Sleep Disorders, third edition, recognizes 10 sleep-related movement disorders characterized by relatively simple, stereotypic movements that disrupt sleep initiation, maintenance, or quality. It also recognizes four isolated movement-related symptoms that are considered normal variants. A familiarity with all sleep-related movement disorders is required to identify those that are clinically significant and to determine when they are a manifestation of neurodegenerative or other neurologic or medical disorders.
