Abstract

This chapter is organized into two major sections: (1) vaccine basics and (2) the development and rollout of COVID-19 vaccines. The goal of the first section is to provide background on the history of vaccines and the science of vaccinology, which are founded on the principles of immunity. The hope is that this will enable us to understand the challenges, methods, and available technology for developing a safe and effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2. The biology of SARS-CoV-2, which is responsible for causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is presented in detail elsewhere in this book. This chapter includes a description of basic vaccine development methods and strategies. It then discusses different SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, both those currently in use and those under investigation. The chapter concludes with a realistic projection for the future of the first- and second-generation vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, based on the historical scientific record.
