Abstract

The development of controlled drug delivery system technology has introduced a new concept in disease treatment and has been a heavily researched field. This chapter describes metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) as a drug delivery matrix. In addition, some principles of the drug delivery system and the chemistry of MONPs are discussed as well as the importance, methods of obtaining, and some examples of porous nanostructured metal oxide. The synthesis of these nanostructured materials allows the alteration of physical and chemical properties by modifying the size and shape of particles. Therefore, different properties can be modulated by varying particle size and morphology, allowing it to be used in innovative technologies such as new magnetic and optical devices, new catalysts, and drug release, among other applications.
