Abstract

Essential oils (EOs) are known from ancient time due to their deployment in medicinal purposes. They are natural plant product composed of volatile secondary metabolites of majorly terpenes and monoterpenes. The fragile oils are obtained from numerous plant parts viz., foliage, stem, floral part, bark, and roots through various conventional and advanced methods. Ocimum, Cinnamomum, Eucalyptus, Citrus, Lavandula, Mentha, Rosmarinus, Melaleuca etc. are most abundant source of essential oils. Essential oils have wide applications as antibacterial, antimalaria, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, anti-lice, insecticidal activity, antitumor and hormone stimulation reaction etc. Owing to multivariate application of essential oils in pharmaceutical field and drug discovery, the major emphasis should be concealed on research related to improvement of quality and quantity for its further implication in field of medicine.
