Abstract
In this chapter, the potential of ionic liquids for thermodynamic and kinetic promotion of gas hydrates is discussed. The designer nature of ionic liquids allows the synthesis of biocompatible compounds with the desired set of properties and functionalities such as amphiphilic nature, multiple hydrogen bonding sites, varying hydrophobicity and zwitterionic nature that can be used systematically to alter the hydrate nucleation and growth in a controlled manner.
