Abstract

This chapter begins by enlightening the readers on how animals thrive by exploiting intelligently designed heat exchangers. It then differentiates indirect or noncontact heat exchanger from direct contact heat exchangers. Indirect heat exchangers, the focus of this chapter, are categorized based on flow configuration into counter-flow, parallel flow, and cross-flow types. A first law thermodynamic analysis is performed on a heat exchanger with a constant-temperature wall. Lastly, log mean temperature difference and number of transfer units methods are delineated.
