Abstract

Clinical research must be performed in accordance with international standards of ethics. Regulations and international standards exist for the protection for human research subjects, including the Belmont Report in the United States and the internationally recognized Declaration of Helsinki. The principles of ethics and how they should be applied can be complex, nuanced, and challenging to balance. Nonetheless, research cannot be conducted, if it does not assure respect for persons, beneficence, and justice.
