Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to summarize the developments in the investigation of attention, and to show how these are influencing the thinking about the relationship between the attention and language faculties of the mind. Attention is a faculty that has different components: orienting, detecting, shifting, and maintenance of vigilance. This chapter also presents recent views of the structure and functions of attention and their relationship to the conceptions of language disorders. A brief review of the methodologies used in the study of attention is presented. Three aspects of recent findings and thoughts about attention are reviewed: the structure of the attentional faculty, allocation and movement of attention, and what attention is. Findings from both language-impaired and normal populations are presented.
