Abstract

This chapter discusses the terms of use for Web sites and online applications. These electronic documents are designed to set the rules between a company and its online users. Much of their content is for the company's protection. Many Web sites are about the “three C's”—content, community, and commerce. Terms of use documentation addresses each of these areas. Terms of use are both business and legal documents. Terms of use can be a clickwrap, a browsewrap, or a combination of the two. It often provides that site owner reserves the right to cancel the registration of any user at any time for any reason. Some sites have a similar provision for any user that violates the terms of use on any Web site policy, such as policies for chat rooms and Weblogs. The terms of use should make it clear that content on the site belongs to the site owner and its content suppliers, and should also state that no use of the content or the site is permitted.
