Abstract

Both planning and evaluation of an irrigation project requires relevant information of soil in the irrigation command. Soil information and its characteristic are also important for selecting crop and water management practices as well as for deciding the irrigation application method. Water losses in the field are also different for different soil characteristics. Considering the importance of this aspect, this chapter presents methods and procedures for analyzing physical characteristics of the soil, including the soil-water constants with a detailed protocol. The chapter also includes the various mechanisms of soil moisture assessment in the field itself using TDR 300 and laboratory, including fixing up of the soil-water constants, such as field capacity, permanent wilting point, and saturation moisture constant.
