Abstract

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder whose definition and diagnosis have undergone many changes over past decades. Even now, there are psychiatrists who are dissatisfied with current diagnostic schemes. The frequency of schizophrenia in adults is much higher when children have experienced several kinds of trauma such as sexual and physical abuse. Adoption studies have shown that adverse childhood experiences are much more likely to lead to schizophrenia when there is a history of schizophrenia in the family background. Twin studies have supported a moderate influence of heredity, but because one-egg and two-egg twins differ in environmental similarity, there is no effective way to obtain a good estimate of heritability.
