Abstract

The use of cytotoxic drugs for chemotherapy remains the major method for the treatment of malignant carcinoma. Chemotherapeutic drugs deliver the cytotoxic effect to the cancer cells targeting one of the symptoms of cancer—rapid cell division. As a result, many normal cells that are also rapidly dividing are equally affected by chemotherapy, causing severe side effects. Secondly, many cancer patients initially respond to the chemotherapy, but shortly thereafter, they develop resistance to the treatment. Chemosensitization can improve the efficacy of chemotherapy without augmenting side effects. Chemosensitization can be achieved by targeting different techniques adopted by cancer cells, such as multidrug resistance or aberrant signaling leading to cell division and antiapoptotic activities. Many plant-derived dietary phytochemicals, called nutraceuticals, with anticancer properties are currently under investigation for chemosensitization. Zerumbone, a phytochemical isolated from Zingiber zerumbet, has previously been shown to exhibit antineoplastic activity. New emerging research indicates that zerumbone could possibly be used for chemosensitization of cancer cells.
