Abstract

Behavior is the result of present and past circumstances that can be traced back to the natural environment. An understanding of these circumstances, or the function of the behavior, is important in the development of behavior intervention plans. Often, interventionists determine function through either functional behavior assessment or functional analysis. Within this chapter, we describe various functions of behavior, provide an overview of functional behavior assessment, and describe various types of functional analysis. We contrast the Autism Partnership Method from a conventional approach to functional behavioral assessment and functional analysis. Throughout the chapter, several research studies are described.
