Abstract

Evaluating sexual assault risk reduction programs is critical to understanding how these interventions are serving to decrease rates of sexual assault. In this chapter, the authors provide an introduction to program evaluation, with a particular emphasis on risk reduction, resistance education, and self-defense. Core concepts addressed in this chapter include how to use theory and research to develop evidence-based programs, and how to implement process and outcome evaluation to determine whether a program is meeting its stated goals. Examples from previously evaluated programs are presented to highlight key concepts in program evaluation. Drawing from previously evaluated resistance programs, a summary of outcome assessments commonly utilized to evaluate program effects is also provided.
