Abstract

The purpose of this introductory chapter is to describe a new paradigm of the cyber-physical system: the wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs) and its latest achievement in charging scheduling algorithms. A solid understanding of wireless sensor networks and scheduling theory helps to interpret detailed information and problem statements about the on-demand charging architecture. In this chapter, we investigate the charging scheduling problem of WRSNs, in which wireless charging vehicles (WCVs) move to replenish the battery energy of stationary sensor nodes. The chapter starts with the definition of WRSNs and its potential applications. Particular emphasis is placed on charging scheduling models for the on-demand charging architecture. The objective of charging scheduling is to avoid node energy exhaustion and to prolong the overall network lifetime. Finally, we extend our discussions from charging scheme with a single WCV to those with multiple WCVs under on-demand charging architecture.
