Abstract

Third-wave behavior therapies include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), and Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs). These therapies generally share an emphasis on acceptance and mindfulness. While there is considerable support for the use of third-wave therapies (particularly ACT, MCT, and MBIs) for the treatment of anxiety disorders in adults, research on third-wave therapies for the treatment of anxiety disorders in youth is limited. In this chapter, the theoretical foundations, processes of change, and evidence in support of ACT, DBT, MCT, and MBIs as applied to anxiety disorders in youth are presented. A case example that highlights the potential application of each of the third-wave therapies is also discussed. These therapies merit further research to evaluate their efficacy in the treatment of youth with anxiety disorders.
