Abstract

Forensic science is very well poised on the threshold of a new era of communication, dialog, and information sharing. The forensic science community is the focus of several significant efforts currently under way to gauge the quality of the infrastructure and to determine the direction of future endeavors to support the US medico-legal death investigation system and the US forensic laboratory system—the two pillars of the criminal justice system. The Bureau of Justice Statistics has undertaken several surveys of forensic laboratories. While these surveys have gone a long way toward serving as a useful head count and catalog of the components of these systems, they fall short in providing anything akin to a comprehensive study that ultimately leads to policy recommendations for the improvement of forensic science and forensic pathology. This chapter reflects that a renewed interest in studying and improving forensic science is the creation of two separate ventures designed to build new bridges between forensic science and the law.
