Abstract

This chapter explains how the magnetic properties of sediments can contribute to reconstructing paleotsunami characteristics through magnetic susceptibility (MS) or/and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS). Providing a measure of wave train kinetics, these methods constitute a breakthrough for deciphering paleotsunami characteristics and have recently become key elements of the sedimentology toolbox. The chapter provides a brief presentation of the sedimentary characteristics relevant to MS and AMS, and then the techniques are presented in detail, before we explore their implementation and their contribution to deciphering tsunami deposits, through field and laboratory examples.
