Abstract

The South Asian high (SAH) is a crucial upper-level anticyclonic circulation of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) system. Its intensity variations and horizontal movements are closely related with ISM rainfall variability. Especially, the zonal shift of the SAH is highly correlated with the summer monsoon rainfall over the northern ISM region (NISM). A strong association has been found between the zonal shift in the SAH and the NISM rainfall on quasi-biweekly time scales, representing the interaction between monsoonal convection and the mid-latitude circulation. The zonal shift of the SAH may explain the non-ENSO-related variation of the ISM rainfall, and it can act as a bridge connecting the ISM rainfall and the East Asian summer monsoon rainfall. Improving model representation of the interactions between the SAH and monsoon rainfall will benefit monsoon rainfall prediction.
