Abstract

In this chapter, we aim to align the domains of mental health and group dynamics in youth sport research. In the chapter, we outline evidence related to mental health and well-being through participation in organized youth sports, and orient these findings to highlight promising areas of mental health research linked to group dynamics. Conceptualizations of mental health will briefly be discussed in relation to sports participation, including the Mental Health Continuum. We put forward a framework based on the Personal Assets Framework for Sports for understanding the influence of group dynamics on the relationship between sport participation and mental health. Individual components of the model are discussed as they relate to child and adolescent sport participants. Finally, we offer a set of future research directions that are informed by the model presented.
