Abstract

Engineering plays a critical role in most aspects of bioenergy production from agriculture through to process engineering and end-use. Engineering design is a key tool in ensuring that bioenergy systems maximise GHG emission savings. This chapter summarises some of the key lessons from the development of different biomass conversion pathways in recent years. It shows that advances in engineering have improved the efficiency of bioenergy production, while also improving GHG balances. Examples include lower emissions from fertiliser production; precision agriculture; preprocessing techniques such as torrefaction; advanced thermo-chemical conversion processes; and direct emission abatement technologies.
