Abstract

Many reactions used to make carbon-carbon bonds were introduced in previous chapters. Molecules possessing a polarized electrophilic carbon (δ+) were common in previous chapters, as with the reaction of an alkyl halide or a carbonyl compound with nucleophiles or Grignard reagents in Chapter 11, or with nucleophilic enolate anions in Chapter 13. In Section 1.2, disconnection of carbon-carbon bonds generated Cd and Ca fragments and Chapters 11–13Chapter 11Chapter 12Chapter 13 focused on Cd fragments. This chapter will focus on reagents and reactions that effectively generate equivalents for a Ca fragment, including substrates possessing a Cδ+ unit.
