Abstract

Field emission displays (FEDs) using carbon nanotrubes (CNTs) as electron sources have been actively studied and developed because the use of CNTs as field emitters are based on the remarkable properties, which are advantageous for electron emitting devices in vacuum nanoelectronics. CNT film emitters in FEDs have been developed to provide a high current density, large-area emission uniformity, and long-term emission stability. Field emission phenomena from CNTs through field emission microscopy of CNTs with various morphologies, emission characteristics, and degradation phenomena of CNT emitters through dynamic observation of field emission from CNTs by in situ transmission electron microscopy, which reveals the robustness and limitations of CNT emitters, and the applications of CNT-based field emitters to electron emitting devices, are also described in the chapter.
