Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the current status of the distribution of heavy metals in water and sediment samples of two industrialized sites and one supposedly unaffected site located along the southeast coast of India. The samples were analyzed for heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The results indicated elevated levels of nonessential metals Cd and Pb, and essential metals Cu and Zn. Recorded heavy metal concentrations in water also exceeded the permissible levels. Multivariate statistical analysis confirmed the interrelationships and sources of heavy metals in different sites. According to the principal component analysis results, Cuddalore and Tuticorin are affected by industrial and domestic effluents, whereas the Muthupet ecosystem was contaminated by waste waters from agriculture, aquaculture, and boat navigation activities. Immediate monitoring activities and implementation of appropriate remedial and reclamation efforts are suggested for saving the coastal zone from further deterioration and for future sustenance.
