Abstract

This chapter reviews definitions of and views on addictive behaviors, including addiction-like eating behavior, by the lay public and the scientific community. Current assessment approaches to capture “food addiction” or “eating addiction” are presented, and overlaps between addiction-like eating and eating disorders and obesity are summarized. Finally, controversies about validity of the “food addiction” concept and about its potential implications for prevention and treatment of eating disorders and obesity are discussed.
