Abstract

There is a current failing in some forensic laboratories that deserves to be rectified if the complete and reliable reconstruction of certain shooting incidents is to take place. Some laboratories have actually closed down their trace evidence sections for various reasons; all of which are unacceptable if justice is to be served. It is also regrettable that some firearm examiners consider themselves just that exclusively examiners of firearms and ammunition components. Similarly, many crime scene investigators only collect evidence, instead of critically thinking about what they are seeing at a scene, the possible explanations, and the subsequent formulation of requests for the analysis by the crime laboratory. This is shortsighted and contrary to good forensic science particularly when it comes to the various types of trace evidence that might be present on fired bullets, fired cartridge cases, or even the firearm itself.
