Abstract

Over the last few years, sodium alginate-based blends have been studied extensively for their applications in environmental sectors especially their uses in the management of wastewater due to their cost-effective, biocompatible and nontoxic properties. This chapter provides an overview of manufacturing and applications of sodium alginate-based blends in waste water management. Besides providing better understanding of sodium alginate biopolymer, its crosslinking mechanisms and gelation process, this chapter also elaborate the adsorption phenomena and the working of sodium alginate-based blends for the management of different pollutants such as heavy metals, antibiotics and dyes in wastewater and water. The chemical and physical properties of sodium alginate-based blends analyze their effectiveness under various conditions of applications. A number of sodium alginate-based blends along their sorptive and physicochemical characteristics have been demonstrated. This chapter not only highlights the recent development and advancement in sodium alginate-based blends but also provides an insight of future tasks for their environmental applications.
