Abstract

This chapter considers the transport policies which might be adopted to address the challenge of traffic-related air pollution and its associated exposures and health impacts. It considers how potential policies might best be identified and preferred policies selected. It introduces the concept of and needs for option generation as a formalized approach to selecting policy options. It stresses the importance of defining the context for option generation, including the definition of policy objectives. It discusses possible strategies and policy measures and considers sources of evidence for them. It outlines the case for packaging of measures, and the use of packages to overcome constraints. It then reviews formal approaches to option generation and subsequently considers the principles of project design and appraisal. It concludes with a series of recommendations for good practice.
