Abstract

Driven by the development of renewable energy, the floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) has been developed quickly over recent years. The mooring system design of FOWTs played an essential role in their deployment. In this chapter, various types of FOWTs and their associated mooring systems are reviewed. Existing rules and standards that specifically address the design of FOWTs mooring systems are summarized. The primary difference of mooring design and analysis between the FOWTs and the traditional oil and gas facilities are highlighted, including the difference in the design criteria, environmental loads estimation, and coupling between the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic responses. Finally, technical challenges and opportunities associated with the mooring design of FOWTs are highlighted.
