Abstract

Advances in stem cell biology bring remarkable revolution to human disease study and therapy, including various liver diseases. The establishment of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), especially induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), makes it possible to obtain infinite hepatocytes derived from human source for cell therapy, disease modeling, and drug testing. While the development of adult stem cells have made the prospect of stem cell therapy and tissue regeneration a clinical reality. Recently, stem cell therapy is widely applied in liver diseases, including acute liver failure, liver cirrhosis, later-stage chronic liver dysfunction, liver transplantation, and other liver diseases. Stem cell therapies hold great promise to repair, restore, or replace liver function. In this chapter, we will review recent progress in basic study and clinical application of different stem cells in diverse liver diseases as well as the existing questions to be answered.
