Abstract
Research into biomaterials and mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) biology is becoming more heavily intertwined, with these two fields converging to advance the design of more effective strategies that harness the proregenerative capacities of MSCs, including adipose-derived stem/stromal cells, for applications in tissue regeneration. Recent advances in the field of biomaterials have focused on the development and characterization of 2D and 3D engineered cellular microenvironments that have the capacity to direct MSC function both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, given their potential to enhance cell retention and survival, biomaterials are increasingly being applied as platforms for delivering MSCs in cell therapies. Ideally, these materials should be designed to guide the cellular response and promote regeneration of the desired tissues.
