Abstract

Human population is increasing exponentially and activities to either fulfil basic life necessities or improve lifestyle of masses result in production of more waste materials. These waste materials have unintentional and negative impacts on life, and the urban habitats being highly populated are more prone to their deleterious effects. However, the approaches towards wastes are contrary as wealthy citizens often consider the wastes to be an environmental issue while many people in developing countries, about 15 million around the globe, consider wastes as an important income source. These people collect, categorize, recycle and sell materials thrown by others. Similarly, many good practices have been employed in various cities of the world with approach of rethinking of waste to become wealth, refuse to become resource and trash to become cash. Rising ecological awareness, limited funds and declining natural resources have urged scientific communities to deal with waste disposal practices. Proper waste disposal includes economical, technical, communal, political and administrative aspects right from household to the entire country. This chapter focuses on various approaches such as minimization, recycling and proper disposal of urban wastes.
