Abstract

This chapter presents a brief about the organization of cataloguing. The organization of cataloguing within a library system, including such matters as reproduction of entries, limited cataloguing, and cataloguing in different kinds of libraries. Among the factors that affect organization are the kind and size of library, the physical form of materials, centralization or decentralization of cataloguing within the system, whether the library is subject departmentalized, and the use made of centralized services. The cataloguing department will often perform a large number of duties, many of which are not strictly cataloguing operations. Catalog maintenance and revision are particularly important in large libraries but essential in all libraries. Three methods of costing cataloguing operations are dividing the cost of the cataloguing unit by the number of items dealt with, analysing the production per head of staff, or analysing the time spent on each operation.
