Abstract
National security and the new blue economy are inextricably intertwined. While the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard do not seek profit in the global marketplace, they share a common requirement with other new blue economy participants for a thorough knowledge of the maritime environment to enable safe and effective operations. This article will focus on a narrow subset of the elements of national security that depend critically on the new blue economy, namely the ability of the US Navy and Marine Corps in the Department of Defense and the US Coast Guard in the Department of Homeland Security, the Naval Service, to leverage superior knowledge of the ocean environment to create advantage in the array of maritime mission needs that arise across the security spectrum of day-to-day competition, crisis, and conflict.
