Abstract

The genus Enterobacter is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae within the class Gammaproteobacteria. It is widely dispersed in various ecologic niches such as water, soil, and plants, as well as the alimentary tract of humans. Various Enterobacter species possess multiple growth-promoting activities and therefore are plant growth enhancers. Yet, other species are opportunistic pathogens. The mechanisms via which Enterobacter species sustain plant growth and productivity include nitrogen fixation, improvement of nutrient uptake, solubilization of inorganic phosphate, production of plant hormones, reduction of ethylene levels, and production of antimicrobial compounds. Additionally, they protect plants against phytopathogens. This chapter presents an overview about various roles played by Enterobacter in plant growth promotion, biocontrol, phytoremediation, and biofortification. Enterobacter can be exploited as a promising and ecofriendly strategy in sustainable agriculture worldwide.
