Abstract

Demand response has become an integral aspect of the smart grid operation with 100% renewable energy that is highly penetrated with electric vehicles charging. Demand response improves the grid performance, boosts reliability, and reduces environmental consequences and the development of communication infrastructures. Demand response has the potential to offer power system operators a variety of flexible resources through a number of various strategies. Each scheme has the potential to impact system performance in unique ways, which must be taken into account when making operational decisions. Thus, a realistic and practical perspective can be embedded in the selection process by grouping various demand response schemes according to their possible implications on the electric grid, operational objectives, and economic incentives. This chapter begins with an overview of why the widespread adoption of EVs is important, and then moves on to detail the various charging options for EVs. The disadvantages of uncoordinated charging on the distribution grid are then discussed, along with the benefits of coordinated charging. The grid planning strategies are overviewed followed by an in depth discussion on demand response schemes and smart charging. The role that EVs play in supporting the electrical grid is covered. Finally, some of the difficulties associated with driving EVs are discussed.
