Abstract

Unit cells in conjunction with micromechanical FE analysis have been widely used as a means of material characterisation of modern composites. However, they have been mostly applied in an ad hoc manner based on individual cases. Their appropriate formulations are often tedious tasks for most unit cell users, and their practical implementations are challenging. A significant and systematic development has been carried out in recent year to automate the implementation. Eventually, a piece of software, UnitCells©, came to light as a secondary development on the platform of Abaqus CAE. It is a code written in Python programming language, which incorporates various unit cells in a rigorous and systematic way according to their formulations and at the same time automates the implementation of their modelling processes. The developed code has been thoroughly verified and some of the validation cases are shown in this chapter as examples of application.
