Abstract

Health care is a service sector that requires a lot of human labor. Health service providers are essentially the human connection that brings information to health action, preventing illness, managing the risks, healing, and caring for people, and alleviating pain and suffering. Hence, human resources for health (HRH), i.e., doctors, nurses/midwives, and other groups of the skilled health workforce, are crucial for improving population health. However, HRH shortage is a global perennial problem, further aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the various interventions, HRH shortage has remained a grave issue for decades. Beyond availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality, HRH needs focus on effective delivery of healthcare services. This chapter deals with various cadres and dimensions of HRH, interventions, and challenges in ensuring skilled HRH for effective public health practice.
