Abstract

Biofuels have attracted great attention as a potential source of renewable energy because the burning of fossil fuels accounts for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions and is also responsible for climate change. Among all the global biofuel production programs, only a few are considered feasible; however, most of these programs involve high social costs and environmental markers. Therefore, the assessment of the economic, environmental, and social impacts of biofuel production needs to be carefully evaluated using proposed sustainability criteria and indicators. This chapter is mainly focused on the environmental, economic, and social impacts of biofuel production in both developed and developing countries. In addition, a general overview of biofuels and worldwide developments in biofuel are also discussed in brief.
