Abstract

Social support is an important modifiable risk factor for patients with chronic diseases including chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are limited studies evaluating the impact of changes in perception of social support on outcomes in CKD patients. Perception of social support has been associated with survival, compliance with dialysis treatments, hospitalization risk, assessment of quality of life, and depression. Changes in perception of social support impact CKD patients through multiple mechanisms including hormonal effects, increased access to healthcare, changes in behavioral compliance, and depressive affect. Clinical trials to study interventions designed to increase perception of social support in CKD patients are urgently needed.
