Abstract

Marine invertebrates are excellent sources of bioactive metabolites with varied structural motifs and pharmacodynamic activities. Many invertebrate-derived metabolites have been linked to the bacterial symbionts they harbor, the true producer of these metabolites. However, the isolation and study of the symbiotic microbes remained a challenge for years. The advent of the metagenomic approach has opened up a breakthrough in studying the gene and metabolic pathways of inaccessible symbiotic microbial populations of marine invertebrates. This review focus on symbiotic relationships and localization of natural products, the metagenomic sequencing approach, targeted metagenomics and application in drug discovery to bring out the potential of the vast, untapped marine unculturable microbial resource.
