Abstract

The development of CRISPR-Cas systems promises to revolutionize plant breeding and to accelerate crop improvement in a rapidly changing climate environment by enabling the precise genetic manipulation of crop species. Here, we present an overview of the latest advances in utilization of base editors and prime-editing components for precise genome editing in cereals. Moreover, we highlight the importance of genome-editing technology for crop improvement, focusing on applications in cereal traits and breeding technologies. In addition, we examine conventional genome-editing approaches for creation of knockouts in cereal plants, as well as their delivery in planta. We conclude by discussing challenges that these new technologies are facing to realize their potential and widespread adoption to accelerate cereal improvement.
