Abstract

Reducing the number of steps in a bioprocess manufacturing operation will typically lower costs and increase product yield. One particular area of interest where attempts have been made to combine unit operations and thus reduce number of processing steps is the recovery of the desired product from feeds containing particulates, such as fermentation broths or cell cultures. The expanded bed adsorption (EBA) technology has been shown to efficiently capture products from feeds in the presence of cells and/or cell debris. By using EBA it is possible to combine clarification, capture and concentration in one unit operation.
