Abstract

This chapter describes the origins and properties of electromagnetic radiation. The dual wave and particle nature of electromagnetic radiation is described. The various classifications and origins of electromagnetic radiation related to radioactivity and relativistic subatomic particles are discussed including gamma radiation, annihilation radiation, Cherenkov radiation, X-radiation, bremsstrahlung, nuclear bremsstrahlung, and synchrotron radiation. The discovery, origin, and applications of synchrotron radiation are discussed. The mechanisms of interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter are reviewed including the photoelectric effect, Compton effect, pair production, annihilation. The mechanisms of attenuation of gamma radiation by matter is described and calculations of gamma-ray attenuation are carried out.
